Kohlrabi Azur Star
Kohlrabi Azur Star is regarded as the best open pollinated purple Kohlrabi. Azur Star produces attractive, flat-round bulbs with purple skin with crisp white flesh. Very uniform yields compared to many other open pollinated varieties on the market.
Best harvest at 5-7cm diameter. Peel the skin off and eat raw cooked. Some say it has a turnip flavour but I think it is like Broccoli stem. About 60 days from sowing to harvest. Fresh from the US and not easily sourced in Australia.
Sow: September to October, late January to March.
Spacing: Plants 10 to 20cm, Rows 30-40cm.
Kohlrabi has been created by artificial selection for lateral meristem growth (a swollen, nearly spherical shape); its origin in nature is the same as that of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts: they are all bred from, and are the same species as, the wild cabbage plant (Brassica oleracea).
Germination: Optimal Soil temperature is 20 to 24 C (around 5-10 days to germination)
