Onion Long Red Tropea
Onion Long Red Tropea is a lovely Italian heirloom variety that produces quite long (torpedo like) red bulbs that are handy as either red onions or spring onions. These flavourful specialty onions mature early and hold well. Well suited to cool climates. A favourite spring onion.
Sow: Autumn to Spring (maybe skip June) Ideally treat like a bulbing onion and sow inside or a hothouse in July to August for larger bulbs. Harvest around January.
Spacing: 10cm (can grow two together but for largest size grow individually). rows 15 to 20cm.
Because the wild onion is extinct and ancient records of using onions span western and eastern Asia, the geographic origin of the onion is uncertain, although domestication likely took place in Southwest or Central Asia. Onions have been variously described as having originated in Iran, western Pakistan and Central Asia.
Germination: Optimal Soil temperature is 22 to 24 C (around 10-14 days to germination)
