Shelling Pea Purple Podded

Shelling Pea Purple Podded are easy to pick as the delightful purple pods really stand out amongst the foliage. This heirloom also produces fragrant purple-pink flowers which turn to deep-purple pods filled with tasty green peas.

Best used as a shelling pea however I ate a few early like a snow pea and they were also tasty. Strong, climbing vines to 1.5 to 1.7m tall which thrive in well-drained, well-watered, limy (potash helps) soil.

Sow August to October (cool climate). Can sow Autumn to overwinter.

Cool Climate: APR – OCT (or sow AUG-SEPT and grow something else in Winter)

Temperate:  MAR – SEPT

Sub – Tropical: late APR/MAY – JUL

Tropical: APR – MAY (you want them maturing before the weather gets too warm)

Arid: MAR – AUG

  • Frost does not kill the plant, but it impacts the flower

Spacing thickly along a trellis, 30 cm rows.

Germination: Optimal Soil temperature is 18 to 22 C (around 7 to 10 days to germination)
