Sugar Snap Pea Sugar Bon

Sugar Snap Pea Sugar Bon is a popular dwarf sugar snap pea to 50cm high. Delicious crunchy pods you eat whole. Amazing in salads raw. Pods grow to around 8cm long. Ideal for windy spots.

Around 2 to 4 % of the peas will produce an off-type regular pea plant which my wife has commented on since we stumbled across these forcing some research.

The modern sugar snap pea is the progeny of a cross between a snow pea and an unusual pea that was tightly podded with thick walls. The cross was made in the late 1960s by a Gallatin Valley (USA) plant breeder, Calvin Lamborn.

The result is a pea that breaks or snaps like a green bean; the pods have thick walls, are sweet, and are edible (except for the strings). Unlike the snow pea, the sugar snap pea is allowed to mature and become fully rounded.

Sow – August to October (cool climate). Can sow in Autumn to overwinter. Add potash at planting.

Spacing – thickly along a trellis, 30 cm rows.

Germination: Optimal Soil temperature is 18 to 22 C (around 7 to 10 days to germination)
