Sunflower Giant Russian

The image of summer. Given the perfect conditions, this Giant sunflower can get to 3 metres high.  This annual produces the famous looking yellow sunflower with a diameter of up to 45cm. Good for attracting beneficial insects and birds.

Plant is a sunny spot that receives ideally 8 hours sun a day. Plant into a spot that has been enriched with organic matter previously as they are heavy feeders (if you want max height). Place a stake and tie to it as the plant grows to protect against the winds.

Sow after risk of frost (late October to November). Minimum 30cm spacing but more for even taller plants.

  • Sunflowers originate in the Americas. They were first domesticated in what is now Mexico and the Southern United States. Domestic sunflower seeds have been found in Mexico, dating to 2100 BCE. Native American people grew sunflowers as a crop from Mexico to Southern Canada. In the 16th century the first crop breeds were brought from America to Europe by explorers.
